How to Reset an NVR/DVR Password with Hik-Connect

You can reset the password of a supported NVR or DVR with Hik-Connect when the recorder is already enabled for the service and bound to the account you control. The process starts on the recorder's local display, uses the app to scan a QR code, and finishes on the recorder with a verification code and a new password.

This is an account-verified recovery workflow, not a factory reset. It does not erase recordings or configuration when completed normally. Support varies by recorder model and firmware, so keep the device manual available.

When this reset method should work

  • You can reach the recorder's local login screen with a connected monitor and mouse.
  • The recorder was previously enabled for Hik-Connect.
  • The recorder is bound to the same account currently signed in on the mobile app.
  • The local password-recovery screen includes a Hik-Connect verification option.
  • The app and recorder firmware are reasonably current for the model.

If the device is owned by a client or organization, confirm authorization before changing credentials. Do not use another person's account or share recovery codes in email, chat, or tickets.

Reset the password in three stages

Stage 1: display the recovery QR code

  1. Open the NVR or DVR login screen on its local monitor.
  2. Select Forgot Password.
  3. Choose Verify by Hik-Connect or the equivalent option shown by the firmware.
  4. Leave the generated QR code visible while you open the mobile app.

Stage 2: verify ownership in the app

  1. Sign in to Hik-Connect with the account that is already bound to the recorder.
  2. Open More, then choose Reset Device Password. Menu wording can vary by app release.
  3. Scan the QR code displayed on the recorder.
  4. Keep the verification code on screen and move directly to the recorder.

Stage 3: set the new recorder password

  1. Enter the app's verification code on the recorder.
  2. Create a new, unique device password that meets the displayed rules.
  3. Confirm the new password and sign in locally.
  4. Update authorized clients, mobile devices, or management software that stored the old recorder password.

If the QR-code reset fails

The verification option is missing. The model or firmware may not support this path, or the service may not have been enabled before lockout. Check the device manual and use an approved alternative recovery method.

The app says the device is bound to another account. Sign in with the owning account or complete the documented unbind/ownership process. Repeated scanning will not transfer ownership.

The QR code is invalid or expired. Generate a fresh code on the recorder, confirm that the app is signed in to the correct region/account, and scan again without taking or forwarding a screenshot.

The new password works locally but remote viewing fails. Update the stored recorder credentials in each authorized client. Do not weaken the new password simply to restore an old integration.

After recovery: close the security gap

  • Store the new password in the organization's approved password manager.
  • Remove former staff or installer access that is no longer required.
  • Review account ownership, recovery email, and phone details.
  • Export or document the current configuration according to the site's maintenance policy.
  • Record the recovery date and authorized operator without recording the password itself.

For compatible recorder options, see the network video recorder collection. For the official recovery sequence, use the NVR/DVR password reset guide. Model-specific instructions take priority over this general workflow.

Password recovery checklist

Prepare the device details before starting a reset

Use the recovery method supported by the exact recorder and firmware. Record the current network and camera configuration first, and avoid repeated guesses that can extend lockout time.

Identify the recorder

Record the complete NVR or DVR model, serial number, firmware version and current date shown by the device.

Confirm local access

Use a local monitor and mouse when possible, and verify that you can reach the login or password recovery screen.

Choose the supported method

Check whether the recorder offers a reserved email, security questions, GUID file, QR workflow or an authorized recovery process.

Verify after reset

Test local login, camera status, recording, time, network access and mobile app binding after the password changes.

Recovery options vary by recorder generation, firmware and region. Use a supported recovery method shown by the device or matching documentation; do not share verification files or reset codes publicly.
