Turn each camera position into a testable specification

A useful camera is defined by what it records at the required distance and lighting, not by resolution alone. Evaluate optics, housing, network, storage and recorder behavior as one system.

Five decisions for network camera selection

Select the form factor for the mounting position

Use bullet cameras for visibly directed views, domes where a compact or impact-resistant enclosure is useful, turrets for flexible aiming and PTZ cameras for active movement. Confirm the exact housing and mount for the surface and environment.

Define field of view and target distance

Specify the scene width and detail needed at the farthest important point. A fixed lens suits predictable coverage, while a varifocal lens supports adjustment during setup. Optical zoom changes the viewed area and does not replace continuous wide coverage.

Evaluate resolution with lighting and motion

Megapixels describe pixel count, not complete image quality. Compare sensor, lens, aperture, low-light behavior, infrared, backlight, shutter needs, scene movement, bitrate and compression for realistic day and night evidence.

Choose only the events the workflow can use

Define which alerts, classifications, audio or alarm inputs are actually required, who receives them and how they are verified. Confirm event support across camera firmware, recorder and monitoring software before relying on a feature.

Plan PoE, bandwidth, storage and recorder fit

Check camera power class, switch budget, cable distance, stream bitrate, codec, NVR channels, incoming bandwidth, storage and decoding. Test required video, audio, PTZ and event functions on the intended recorder.
