Intercom planning guide

Specify the complete call and door-release workflow

An intercom is a system rather than one station. Wiring, addressing, user capacity, lock interfaces, network security and firmware must be planned across every entrance and call destination.

Five decisions for video intercom systems

Choose IP, 2-wire or another supported architecture

IP systems suit structured networks and scalable addressing. A supported 2-wire design may reuse suitable cable, but cable condition, distance, distributors and power limits must be verified before assuming an existing circuit is reusable.

Map entrances, rooms and call destinations

List every entrance, indoor station, reception point and user group. Define which button or directory entry calls which destination, what happens when nobody answers and whether several stations must ring together.

Define the door-release interface

Record the lock type, power supply, exit button, door contact, controller and emergency-release requirements. The intercom relay should be coordinated with the door hardware and local life-safety design.

Plan network, power and account security

Check PoE or local power, switch capacity, cable distance, addressing, time synchronization and remote-access method. Use unique accounts, least-privilege permissions and documented ownership for installers and operators.

Verify stations, firmware and accessories together

Confirm protocol, firmware branch, station capacity, audio codec, video resolution, module support, mounting box and weather rating. Test calling, talk, unlock and event records before a large rollout.

Video intercom selection checklist

Factor What to check Why it matters
System type IP, supported 2-wire or hybrid architecture Controls cabling, power, addressing and expansion options.
Capacity Entrances, apartments, rooms, buttons, users and indoor stations Ensures the system supports the complete building directory.
Infrastructure Cable type, distance, PoE, distributors, switches and backup power Determines whether the design is practical in the existing building.
Door interface Lock, relay, controller, exit button, contact and emergency release Connects visitor communication to controlled physical access.
Call workflow Directory, ring groups, reception, missed calls and remote response Aligns equipment behavior with residents and staff.
Compatibility Firmware, protocol, modules, mounts, audio, video and events Prevents partial operation between otherwise similar devices.

Video intercom questions

Should I choose IP or 2-wire video intercom?

Use IP for structured network flexibility. Consider a supported 2-wire system when suitable existing cable must be reused, after checking condition, distance and power.

Can an old intercom cable be reused?

Possibly, but conductor type, condition, distance, topology and interference must be tested against the exact 2-wire equipment requirements.

Can a video intercom unlock an electric door?

Many systems provide a relay or controller integration, but the lock, power supply, exit and emergency-release design must be verified separately.

Can calls be answered remotely?

Some systems support remote call and unlock workflows. Confirm the exact platform, account permissions, network security, region and ongoing service requirements.

How is apartment or room capacity calculated?

Count entrances, directory entries, indoor stations, simultaneous call needs and expansion. Verify supported capacity for the complete system, not one device.

What information is needed for an intercom quote?

Provide the building type, entrances, rooms, existing cable, network, lock type, indoor stations, call workflow, mounting and destination.

Remote unlocking and visitor records affect physical security and privacy. Use controlled accounts, current firmware and a documented permission process for the exact installation.
