Size the recorder for recording, playback and growth

Channel count is only the first limit. The installation also depends on incoming bitrate, output decoding, storage, PoE power, firmware and event compatibility across the full system.

Four decisions that define the NVR

Calculate channels and incoming bandwidth

Count every active stream and estimate its realistic bitrate using the selected resolution, frame rate, codec and scene activity. Leave headroom for camera additions, bitrate spikes and secondary streams instead of sizing the recorder from channel labels alone.

Plan display and playback decoding

Live multiview, synchronized playback and high-resolution monitor outputs can reach decoding limits before the recording channel limit. Define the simultaneous views and playback workflow, then compare the recorder's decoding specification at the required resolutions.

Build storage from the retention target

Estimate combined bitrate, recording hours and retention days, then add operational headroom. Check drive bay count, supported drive capacity, recording mode, RAID options and whether evidence export or redundancy changes usable storage.

Verify events, protocol and security

Basic video is not the same as full compatibility. Confirm firmware, codec, audio, alarm I/O, PTZ control, smart events, search functions, time synchronization, user permissions and the intended remote-access method for the exact devices.

How many NVR channels should the project allow?

Allow for every installed camera plus realistic expansion. Channel count must still be checked against incoming bandwidth, storage and decoding limits.

Is a PoE NVR required?

A PoE NVR can simplify smaller systems, but a separate PoE network may be better for longer distances, larger power budgets, redundancy or distributed buildings.
