Construction surveillance guide

Turn a temporary site plan into a maintainable system

The system must keep working as structures, power routes, storage areas and access points move. Use a phase-based design with documented coverage, network paths, retention and relocation responsibilities.

Five planning decisions for construction sites

Map the site by phase and priority

Mark public approaches, vehicle gates, pedestrian entry, materials, fuel, equipment, offices and perimeter gaps. Assign each view a purpose and review the map whenever hoarding, scaffolding, cranes or work compounds move.

Design temporary power and network paths

Document fixed power, PoE cable routes, wireless line of sight, mobile signal and surge exposure. Use solar or 4G only after estimating energy and data demand, and keep a maintenance plan for batteries, panels, SIMs and remote links.

Specify useful evidence day and night

Define target distance, scene width, lighting and the detail required at each point. Entrances may need backlight handling and narrower views, while yards and boundaries may need several fixed cameras plus a PTZ for investigation.

Plan recording, alerts and remote access

Size channels, bandwidth and storage from the full camera list. Decide which events need notification, who reviews them, how remote access is secured and how footage is exported when an incident crosses several site zones.

Coordinate installation with site operations

Protect cables and equipment from vehicles, dust, weather and unauthorized access. Record mounting heights, device IDs, passwords, network settings and relocation dates so changes do not create blind spots or unsupported hardware.

Construction site system checklist

Factor What to check Why it matters
Site zones Entrances, perimeter, stores, equipment, offices and changing obstructions Keeps camera placement tied to current operational risks.
Camera selection Target distance, field of view, lighting, housing and movement Determines whether recorded images answer the intended question.
Connectivity PoE distance, fiber, wireless line of sight, 4G signal and uplink capacity Supports dependable recording and controlled remote access.
Power Fixed supply, PoE budget, backup, solar exposure and maintenance Prevents outages at temporary or remote camera points.
Recording Channels, bitrate, retention, alerts, playback and evidence export Aligns storage and operator workflow with project requirements.
Site changes Move schedule, documentation, ownership, cleaning and inspection Maintains coverage as the construction layout evolves.

Construction surveillance questions

Can a construction system be moved between project phases?

Yes, if mounts, cables, network paths, device records and the next coverage plan are prepared before relocation.

Should a temporary site use wired or wireless cameras?

Use wired PoE where practical for dependable power and bandwidth. Wireless links can bridge difficult routes but need clear signal planning, security and maintenance.

When are solar and 4G cameras suitable?

They can support remote points without fixed services when solar exposure, battery capacity, mobile coverage, data use and recording behavior are verified for the site.

Can cameras prevent construction site theft?

Cameras can support deterrence, alerts and investigation, but results also depend on lighting, physical controls, response procedures and site management.

How long should construction footage be retained?

Set retention from contractual, insurance, legal and operational needs, then calculate storage from actual camera bitrate and recording schedules.

What should be included in a construction surveillance request?

Provide a site plan, project phases, priority zones, power and network availability, retention target, remote-access needs, equipment quantities and installation conditions.

Surveillance can support investigation and operations but cannot guarantee prevention. Follow local privacy, worker-monitoring, signage and evidence-retention requirements.
