Size the surveillance network for traffic and PoE load

A stable video network needs realistic bitrate, power and distance calculations. Uplinks, wireless capacity, surge protection, segmentation and maintenance access should be designed before hardware selection.

Five decisions for surveillance transmission

Map cameras, switches, uplinks and recorders

Draw every camera connection, intermediate switch, building link, uplink and recorder interface. Group devices by physical area and failure domain so one cable or switch fault does not silently remove an unexpected part of the site.

Calculate realistic stream and uplink bandwidth

Add main and secondary streams using intended resolution, frame rate, codec and scene activity. Include playback, remote viewing and headroom, then check every switch fabric and uplink rather than only the edge ports.

Build a complete PoE power budget

Check each device power class and maximum demand, switch per-port limits and total PoE budget. Include infrared, heaters, PTZ movement, accessories, cable loss and reserve instead of using typical daytime consumption alone.

Choose copper, fiber or wireless by path

Standard Ethernet distance, electrical exposure, building separation and line of sight influence the medium. Use fiber where isolation or distance requires it and test wireless links for interference, capacity, weather and alignment.

Plan segmentation, protection and maintenance

Use controlled management access, VLANs where appropriate, surge protection, grounding, labeled ports and configuration backups. Document power supplies, uplinks and spare capacity so faults can be diagnosed without disrupting the complete system.

How is a PoE switch power budget calculated?

Add the maximum demand of every connected device, account for cable loss and operating conditions, then keep reserve below the switch's total budget.

Does every camera port need Gigabit Ethernet?

Many individual cameras use less than 100 Mbps, but uplinks and aggregated paths often need higher capacity. Calculate the actual stream total.

How far can a PoE camera cable run?

Standard Ethernet is normally designed around a 100-meter channel. Extensions require supported equipment and verification of power, bandwidth and cable quality.

When is a wireless bridge suitable?

Use it where cable is impractical and clear line of sight, interference, throughput, mounting, power and weather conditions have been tested.

Should I use a managed or unmanaged switch?

Use unmanaged equipment for simple, controlled networks. Choose managed features when VLANs, monitoring, redundancy, PoE control or remote diagnostics are required.
